Immutable Linux is a genuine category now, not a niche experiment. Fedora Silverblue, Bazzite, SteamOS, Vanilla OS, and NixOS have all taken different approaches to the same core problem: OS updates that are reliable, reversible, and do not accumulate cruft.
This post compares Shani OS to the most significant alternatives honestly — including where the others genuinely win. There is no single "best immutable distro" for all situations. The right choice depends on your hardware, workflow, and how much configuration complexity you are willing to accept.

The Core Technical Difference: Update Mechanisms
The biggest architectural divergence is how each system applies OS updates.
Shani OS — Btrfs Send/Receive
shani-deploy downloads a complete OS image as a Btrfs send stream, verifies it (SHA256 + GPG), and pipes it into btrfs receive on the inactive slot. The result is a byte-for-byte reconstruction of exactly the subvolume that passed build QA.
Advantages: What was signed is what gets written — there is no reassembly or layer application that could introduce divergence. The OS image is a single verified artifact. Rollback switches Btrfs subvolumes — there is no reconstruction involved, it is a pointer change.
Trade-off: Full image downloads (~2–3 GB per update). No incremental patching.
Fedora Silverblue / Bazzite — OSTree + rpm-ostree
OSTree stores the OS as a content-addressed tree of files. Updates are commits in this tree. rpm-ostree can layer additional packages on top of the base commit.
Advantages: Incremental updates (only changed files download). Package layering allows some customisation of the OS image without a full rebuild. Mature technology backed by Red Hat.
Trade-off: Layered packages add complexity and can cause the "works on base Silverblue but not on my layered system" problem. The base system is Fedora's 6-month release cycle — less current than Arch. Rollback is to a previous OSTree commit, which may need a reboot even for the rollback.
SteamOS 3 — Full Image Swap (A/B Partitions)
SteamOS uses a flat A/B partition swap — a complete partition image is written, very similar in concept to Shani OS but using flat partitions rather than Btrfs subvolumes.
Advantages: Extremely clean — no layer management, no OSTree complexity. Valve's integration with Steam hardware is excellent.
Trade-off: Not designed for general PC hardware. NVIDIA is not officially supported. Valve controls the update pipeline — you cannot point it at a private update server. Not suitable for enterprise or OEM deployment on arbitrary hardware.
Vanilla OS 2 — OCI Image Swap
Vanilla OS uses OCI (container) images for the OS root, managed by ABRoot. The OS is an OCI image that transacts between two root partitions.
Advantages: Familiar tooling for those who work with containers. FsGuard integrity checking at boot.
Trade-off: The tooling (ABRoot, APX, VSO) is newer and less battle-tested than the alternatives. Based on Debian Sid (near-rolling), which is a less common base.
NixOS — Nix Generations
NixOS does not swap OS images at all — it builds the OS declaratively from a Nix configuration and switches between "generations" (complete system configurations).
Advantages: Extraordinary reproducibility. The same configuration.nix produces the same system on any NixOS installation. Multiple generations coexist. Roll back to any previous generation.
Trade-off: The learning curve is significant. Nix's language is unlike anything else in the Linux ecosystem. Many things that work trivially on other distros require explicit Nix configuration. Not beginner-friendly.

Gaming: Bazzite and SteamOS Win for Steam Deck
For gaming on a Steam Deck, SteamOS is the obvious choice — it is designed specifically for that hardware, Valve tests against it, and the gaming mode is purpose-built.
For gaming on a general PC (particularly with NVIDIA), Bazzite is the strongest competitor to Shani OS. It ships a gaming stack on top of Fedora Atomic, has a passionate gaming community, and has very good out-of-the-box experience.
Shani OS advantages for gaming:
- Arch Linux base means more current drivers and packages than Fedora's 6-month cycle
- Full image verification (SHA256 + GPG) end-to-end
- NVIDIA works at first boot on both editions
- Zero telemetry — no Steam hardware survey type data from the OS
- Indian hardware commonly sold in India tends to work better tested against Arch than Fedora
Bazzite advantages for gaming:
- Larger gaming community with more gaming-specific documentation
- Steam Gaming Mode (Gamescope session) is more polished
- More gaming-focused ujust scripts for common setup tasks
- Strong HDR support
For most PC gamers in India: Shani OS KDE edition is the right choice. For users who primarily care about Gamescope/Gaming Mode or are deeply embedded in the Bazzite community, Bazzite is a legitimate alternative.

Among the options above, only Shani OS is designed with OEM and enterprise deployment as a core use case:

NixOS takes the fully declarative approach: describe your system in configuration.nix, run nixos-rebuild switch, and the system matches the description. Every setting, every package, every service is in code.
Shani OS takes the imperative approach: install, configure with normal Linux tools, update atomically. Your configuration lives in the /etc overlay and your home directory — not in a declarative specification.
Which is better depends on what you value:
- Declarative (NixOS): If you want to describe your system as code, check it into git, reproduce it exactly on new hardware, and never have drift — NixOS is unmatched. The payoff is worth the steep learning curve for the right workflows.
