Video Editing

DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve is the professional standard for colour grading and is increasingly used for end-to-end editing. The free version is extremely capable — the paid Studio licence adds noise reduction, certain effects, and collaboration features.

DaVinci Resolve requires the proprietary NVIDIA or AMD driver (which Shani OS includes) and ships as a .run installer from Blackmagic Design. Install it inside a Distrobox container to keep it isolated from the immutable host:

Kdenlive

Kdenlive is the fully-featured open-source video editor with a timeline-based interface. It handles multi-track editing, transitions, effects, colour correction, and GPU-accelerated rendering via MLT framework.

Kdenlive supports proxy editing (low-resolution proxies for smooth playback of high-res footage), nested sequences, and a full effects library. For most YouTubers and content creators, Kdenlive covers the complete editing workflow without needing DaVinci Resolve.

OpenShot

OpenShot is a simpler video editor suited to beginners and quick projects:

OBS Studio is pre-installed on neither edition but is the essential tool for any creator who streams or records:

  • Screen capture via PipeWire (works with both GNOME and KDE Wayland sessions)
  • Virtual camera output (via V4L2 loopback)

  • WebRTC streaming via the obs-webrtc plugin

OBS Plugins

Noise suppression for microphone audio: OBS includes RNNoise-based noise suppression as a built-in filter. Add it via the audio source's Filters menu — no plugin required.

PipeWire Screen Capture

OBS on Wayland uses PipeWire for screen capture. On Shani OS, this works automatically:

  1. In OBS, add a new Source → Screen Capture (PipeWire)
  2. A system dialog asks which screen or window to share
  3. Select your target and click Share

For capturing individual windows (not full screen), the PipeWire capture dialog lets you select any open window.

Virtual Camera for Video Calls

OBS's virtual camera allows you to use your OBS scene (with overlays, filters, background removal) as your webcam input in any video call application:

Zencastr and Riverside.fm — both work in the browser on Shani OS.
